Commonly known as “Tanker,” this jacket was originally developed as winter combat wear for armored units. On the European front, it was used not only by armored units but also as a flight jacket due to shortages in winter accessories. When the M1943 field jacket. a multipurpose combat wear item, was adopted in 1943, the winter combat jacket came into limited use. The outer shell has cotton twill that is water and wind resistant. The lining uses 26 0z. wool. Twin needie rolled seams are used for the sides, sleeves, and more. The back has pleats on both sides for ease of movement of the arms. This jacket comes in two types: one with slash pockets and one with patch pockets. The jacket with patch pockets is generally considered the earlier model.
